Palm Oil Three-Phase Separation for Production Plant

LWS520×2150D Three-Phase Decanter Centrifuge Enables Efficient Separation of Solids, Palm Oil, and Water

Project Background

A palm oil production facility processes palm fruit through high-temperature cooking and mechanical pressing. After cooking and pressing, the resulting slurry contains three distinct phases: solid residue (palm fiber and kernel fragments), crude palm oil, and process water. Their existing separation setup couldn't handle the throughput they needed, and manual separation methods were labor-intensive and inconsistent. They needed equipment that could continuously separate all three phases in a single operation while meeting their production capacity targets.

Customer Challenges

  • Existing separation methods couldn't process the required 25m³/h feed rate during peak production periods
  • Manual separation of three phases was time-consuming and resulted in oil loss in the water phase
  • Inconsistent separation quality affected downstream processing and final product quality
  • High operating temperatures required equipment rated for continuous hot operation
  • Palm fruit slurry characteristics varied with fruit ripeness and seasonal conditions, requiring adaptable separation parameters
  • Need for reliable continuous operation to match 24-hour production schedules

ZK SEPARATION Solution

We tested samples of their palm fruit slurry and recommended the LWS520×2150D three-phase decanter centrifuge. This model handles three-phase separation - separating two immiscible liquids (oil and water) plus solids in a single continuous operation.

Solution Implementation

  • Material Testing & Process Design

Lab testing of palm fruit slurry samples to determine optimal bowl speed, differential speed, and weir plate settings for their specific material properties and operating temperature

  • Three-Phase Configuration

Setup of dual liquid discharge ports with adjustable weir plates to control the separation boundary between palm oil (light phase) and water (heavy phase), with solids discharged separately through the conveyor

  • High-Temperature Operation

Equipment rated for continuous operation at elevated temperatures with appropriate material selection and thermal expansion considerations for palm oil processing conditions

  • Installation & Commissioning

Installation during scheduled maintenance window, followed by parameter tuning and operator training on three-phase operation and weir plate adjustment procedures

Processing Results

The three-phase decanter has been running in their production line for over six months, handling continuous shifts and seasonal variations in fruit quality without problems.

Process Demonstration

Solid Phase Discharge: Palm fiber and kernel residue separated from the slurry
Water Phase Discharge: Process water separated from palm oil and solids

Performance Achievements

  • Processing Capacity: Consistently handles 25m³/h feed rate, operating at the upper end of the design range
  • Three-Phase Separation: Clear separation of solids, palm oil, and water phases with minimal cross-contamination
  • Oil Recovery: Reduced oil loss in the water phase compared to previous methods, improving overall yield
  • Solid Phase Quality: Well-dewatered solid residue suitable for further processing or disposal
  • Operational Stability: Continuous operation matching 24-hour production schedules with routine maintenance checks
  • Process Control: Adjustable weir plates allow operators to fine-tune separation boundaries when feed characteristics change

Customer Testimonial

"We've been running this three-phase decanter for six months now, and it's handling our 25 cubic meter per hour feed rate without problems. The separation is clean - we get good oil recovery, the water phase is clear, and the solids discharge is consistent. The weir plate adjustment gives us flexibility when fruit quality changes seasonally. It runs continuously with our production schedule, and maintenance is straightforward. The ZK team helped us get it dialed in during commissioning, and it's been reliable since then."
