Effective Landfill Leachate Treatment with Advanced Centrifuge Technology

LW250x1025C Decanter Centrifuge Delivers Reliable Solid-Liquid Separation for Environmental Technology Company's Waste Management Facility

Project Background

This environmental technology company runs a waste management facility where they deal with landfill leachate - basically the liquid that drains from garbage dumps. It's tough stuff to handle because it's loaded with suspended particles and organic compounds that vary depending on what's in the landfill and the weather. They needed better equipment to clean it up enough to meet discharge regulations without breaking their budget.

Processing Challenges

  • Landfill leachate contains varying concentrations of suspended solids that fluctuate with seasonal conditions
  • High organic content and complex chemical composition make separation difficult with conventional methods
  • Strict environmental discharge standards require consistent treatment performance
  • Previous treatment methods produced inconsistent results during peak flow periods
  • Need for compact equipment due to limited space at the treatment facility
  • Requirement for automated operation to minimize labor costs and ensure continuous processing

Our Solution

We looked at their leachate samples and site conditions, then recommended the LW250x1025C centrifuge with a separate polymer dosing system. The combination works well for this type of application - the dosing system helps the particles clump together before they enter the centrifuge, which improves how much solid material gets removed.

Equipment Technical Specifications

  • Materials & Construction

Duplex stainless steel bowl construction with protective coatings, designed for long-term resistance to the acidic and corrosive nature of landfill leachate

  • Control Systems

Treatment Performance

Since commissioning, the centrifuge has maintained stable operation at approximately 3m³/h processing capacity. The separate polymer dosing system enhances separation efficiency, producing cleaner liquid discharge and drier solid cake for disposal.

Operational Performance Metrics

  • Processing Rate: Running steady at about 3m³/h, which fits well within the 2-5m³/h design capacity
  • Solids Removal: Getting 88-92% of the suspended material out, which keeps the liquid discharge much cleaner
  • Cake Moisture: The dewatered cake comes out at 18-22% solids content - not bone dry, but much better than what they had before
  • Power Usage: Uses about 4.2-4.8 kWh per cubic meter processed, which is reasonable for this size unit
  • Equipment Uptime: Runs about 94% of the time when you factor in scheduled maintenance and the occasional hiccup
  • Effluent Quality: Liquid coming out usually has less than 300mg/L suspended solids, which meets their permit limits

Customer Feedback

"We've been running the LW250x1025C for about eight months now, and it's been doing the job. Leachate isn't easy to work with - some days it's thicker, sometimes more watery - but this unit handles the changes pretty well. The polymer system definitely helps get better separation. Space was tight in our facility, so the smaller footprint worked out. The automated controls mean we don't need someone watching it constantly, which helps with staffing. It's not perfect, but it gets our discharge numbers where they need to be."
