Daily Maintenance

Daily checks take just 10-15 minutes but can save you from major headaches. Make these part of your start-of-shift routine:

Weekly Maintenance

Set aside 30-45 minutes once a week for these checks. We recommend scheduling them during a planned production gap:

Bearing Lubrication Note: For continuous 24/7 operations, bowl bearings may require greasing every 3-5 days rather than weekly. Check your O&M manual for model-specific intervals, and adjust based on bearing temperature trends.

Monthly Maintenance (or Every 700 Operating Hours)

Plan for 1-2 hours of downtime for monthly maintenance. These tasks require the machine to be stopped and locked out:

Lubrication Schedule

Lubrication is one of the most important—and most often overlooked—maintenance tasks. Both under-lubrication and over-lubrication cause bearing failures. Follow these guidelines:

These tasks require 4-8 hours of downtime. Schedule them during planned shutdowns or slower production periods:

Oil Analysis: Consider sending gearbox oil samples to a lab for analysis. They can detect early signs of gear wear, water contamination, or overheating before visible damage occurs. It costs about $30-50 per sample but can save thousands in prevented failures.

Annual Maintenance (Every 8,000 Operating Hours or 1 Year)

Never Weld Rotating Components: The bowl, scroll, and shaft operate at high stress levels. Welding introduces heat-affected zones that can crack under centrifugal forces. When to Increase Maintenance Frequency

Consider more frequent annual maintenance if your application involves:

  • Highly abrasive materials (mining slurries, drilling mud, fly ash)
  • Corrosive or aggressive chemicals

  • Frequent start/stop cycles

Major Overhaul (Every 15,000-20,000 Operating Hours or 5 Years)

At this stage, your decanter has been working hard for years. A major overhaul restores it to like-new condition and extends its service life for another cycle. This is a significant project—typically 3-5 days at our facility or on-site with proper equipment.

What's Included in a Major Overhaul

Rebuild vs. Replace? For decanters over 15 years old, compare overhaul costs against a new machine. Modern decanters often offer 15-25% better efficiency and lower energy consumption. We can provide a cost-benefit analysis to help you decide.

Troubleshooting: When Something's Not Right

Warning Signs That Need Immediate Attention

Stop the machine and investigate if you observe any of the following:

  • Sudden vibration increase: Could be unbalance from material buildup, bearing failure, or scroll contact. Run a flush cycle first; if vibration persists, shut down for inspection
  • Bearing temperature spike: Normal operating temps are typically 50-70°C (120-160°F). Temperatures approaching 85°C (185°F) require immediate investigation
  • Torque climbing above normal: Usually indicates scroll wear, heavy feed, or material buildup. If torque exceeds 70-80% consistently, reduce feed rate and check scroll condition
  • Unusual noise: Metal-on-metal sounds, grinding, or knocking indicate serious problems. Stop immediately
  • Oil or grease leaks: Small leaks become big ones. Address promptly before contamination spreads
  • Smoke or burning smell: Stop immediately. This indicates overheating of bearings, seals, or electrical components
